Packet Capture

Developing SolutionsdsClient GUI allows you to create and run testing scenarios, graph real-time measurements, and manage your dsTest servers and testing scenarios with a standalone application that runs on your PC.  dsClient GUI includes these features:

  • XML document creation, maintenance and management;
  • SmartFlow/SmartEvents creation using a visual, drag-n-drop state machine diagramming tool;
  • SmartMonitor monitoring the progress of a subscriber through your SmartEvents state machine;
  • Operational Measurement (OM) display and graphing, including standardized SmartReport;
  • Bundling of files for archiving or handing off to other users for import into their dsTest xml libraries;
  • dsTest Server management;
  • Interaction with tests while they’re running;
  • Windows and Linux platform support.

Packet Capture

dsClient GUI  supports the capture and display of test traffic with its Packet Capture feature.  This feature provides a tool that allows you to create your dsTest configurations, transmit them to the target servers, and run and monitor the test(s), collecting/capturing the message flows created by the test, and display them, without leaving dsClient GUI.

Packet Capture provides the following features:

  • Create a capture file on the dsTest server, with various configuration options;
  • View a directory listing of existing capture files;
  • Download a capture file from the server;
  • Stream an existing capture file;
  • Stream a current (collecting) file;
  • View capture and server status.

Configuration

The Packet Capture Workspace window consists of four sections:

  • Capture Configuration;
  • Capture File list;
  • Operation and Streaming Options;
  • Server and packet collection status and responses.

In the Capture Configuration Section, the following are configured:

  • File name – The file name for the capture file;
  • File count – the number of files to retain with the current capture;
  • File Size – the maximum size of the capture files being retained for the current capture;
  • Buffer Size – the size of the buffer to use for collecting capture date for the current capture;
  • Protocol – SCTP, TCP or UDP;
  • Port – Port (socket) to use as the source or destination;
  • Capture Count – the number of packet to capture;
  • Connection – IP Address or Device name on which to capture packets.

    Packet Display

If a capture is currently running on the server, the current capture parameters will be displayed in the Capture Configuration section when the Packet Capture window is opened.

The Capture File listing section contains the list of capture files currently in the present working directory on the target server.  These files can be downloaded to the local disk and opened for display, assuming that a display application, such as Wireshark®, exists and is available on the local client machine.

The working directory of the file list can be modified by entering a pathname in the File Name box.

The Operations and Streaming action buttons consist of:

  • Status – retrieves the current capture status from the server;
  • Refresh File List – refreshes the file list;
  • Start – Start a capture;
  • Stop – Stop the current capture.

Server Status and Responses

The Server Status Section provides the current status of capture files, including file name, capture progress, number of packets, start/stop status.

Notes:

  • This feature requires a Developing Solutions support process, dsFilter, to be installed on server.  Contact Developing Solutions Support for instructions on how to install dsFilter on your dsTest server;
  • In order to view the capture files, there must be a display application, such as Wireshark®, resident on the local client machine.
